The Philosophy of History and Politics

This book is unlike any other. First of all, it can only be considered a book in a formal sense. In reality, it is a slice of life in action. It marks a turning point in European history-one of the last, yet genuine, turning points. The content of this book is not original in the least; only the book itself is original. The obsession with originality is a manifestation of decadence, and the decadence of Europe is the supremacy of the barbarian.

Description

This work is addressed to all of Europe, and in particular to its cultural elite. It calls on Europe to engage in a historic struggle spanning two centuries. Europe will participate in this struggle, either as an actor or as the spoils of external powers. If it wishes to act-and not merely endure-in this series of colossal wars, it must be unified, and there is only one way to achieve this. Western culture is ailing, and the continuation of this illness is the continuation of “Chinese-style” conditions in Europe.

The word “Europe” is taking on a new meaning: it now signifies Western civilization, the organic unity that gave rise to the nation-ideas of Spain, Italy, France, England, and Germany as so many stages in its life. These former nations are all dead; the era of political nationalism is over. This did not happen out of logical necessity, but through the organic process of Western history. This organic necessity is the source of our imperative and of European integration. The expression of this organic reality is that the alternatives are to do what is necessary or to fall ill and die.

The imperative of European integration takes the form of the unity of the people, the race, the nation, the state, society, the will-and, of course, the economy as well. The spiritual unity of Europe is already here; its liberation will automatically allow the other phases of organic unity-all of which stem from the spirit-to flourish.
