Robert Faurisson (1929–2018) was a French scholar and professor of modern literature, known in the 1960s and 1970s for his scholarly and sometimes iconoclastic work on poets such as Rimbaud and Lautréamont, on whom he wrote his doctoral dissertation. Beginning in the 1970s, he extended his philological method and critical approach to sources to the study of World War II. Defining himself as a “revisionist”—and fiercely rejecting the accusation of Holocaust denial—he sought to apply to historical archives the same principle of methodical skepticism that he used in literary criticism.
